LIONS INCONSISTENT IN SECOND SCRIMMAGE

FLORENCE -- Two weeks into preseason workouts, the University of North Alabama football team still hasn't found the consistency that head head coach Mark Hudspeth would like to see. The Lions went through a two-hour scrimmage on Sunday evening at Braly Stadium and Hudspeth left saying the team still had a lot of work to do.

"We were much more inconsistent than I expected for our second scrimmage," Hudspeth said. "At times we looked really good and then we would drop a pass, miss a block or have a penalty and kill a drive. We just have to get more consistent."
The UNA offense started strong, driving the length of the field for a touchdown on the opening drive of the scrimmage. After that point, the only consistency Hudspeth saw was in the kicking game.

"Our kicking game was a big plus," he said. Returning place kicker Kenny Spencer made field goals of 51 and 27 yards and transfer Tom Schneider nailed a 25-yarder. Will Batson was also strong punting and on kickoffs.

Hudspeth said he was pleased with the way the offense was able to move the ball out when it was backed up deep in its own territory. He said that Mike McLendon gave the offense a spark and "is starting to show that he wants to be our featured back."

UNA will continue its preseason work on Monday in preparation for an August 28 showdown at home with Southern Arkansas.
